14 hand blown experimental vessels are shown at The Aram Gallery in Learning in Glass. The pieces are the result of a residency conducted between November 2011 and April 2012 by seven international creatives and supported by Salviati, a Murano based manufacturer of blown glass, established in 1859. This research project called Breaking The Mould explored blowing glass into a variety of prototype moulds so as to investigate the possibilities of innovation in glass production. Each shown vessel was a collaborative effort between the Breaking the Mould team (BTM) and the accomplished glass blowers at Salviati. BTM spent a considerable time researching the methods employed by the factory workers, learning the basics of their traditional Venetian technique. It was only once they had understood the process that BTM began to identify areas of the method where experimentation could be introduced – learn first, experiment second.
This exhibition shows 14 examples of what can be achieved by varying one element in a making process – the mould. Materials such as ceramic wool, ceramic ribbon, ceramic tissue and carbon fibre were all used in the shaping of the glass in both wooden and metal outer moulds. The diversity in these materials is grounded in the use of the same tools, furnace, soda-lime glass, oven and craftsmen as Salviati uses in the production of its commercial collections.
To put the results of BTMs research in context, The Aram Gallery has invited Salviati to display a selection of its production pieces alongside the experimental vessels. This naturally invites comparison and enables our audience to better understand what effect these prototype moulds have had. To illuminate further on how each piece was made, a video of each vessel being blown runs in the background of the exhibition.
The Aram Gallery is interested in the way designers think and work. We use this exhibition as a case study to understand how experimentation within the parameters of a refined process, can both lead to exciting outcomes and possibilities for future innovation.

the Domestic Soundscape in Rome for DOS - Disegnare Oggetti Sonori

DOS - Disegnare Oggetti Sonori (Designing Sound Objects)
February 2-24 2013. Opening: February 2nd, 2013 at 6pm

The Fondazione Musica per Roma and the IMF Foundation present a brand new exhibition: DOS Disegnare Oggetti Sonori. Curated by Domitilla Dardi and Elisabetta Pisu, it is the first international exhibition on the relationship between design and sound. DOS is an exclusive journey among products, installations and performances, featuring great international designers whose research focuses on sound - also the source of inspiration for their artistic creations. An original way to describe the other side of design: not only beauty and utility but – especially in recent times - its appeal to the senses. Sight gives way to hearing that in turn inspires the designer. Sound “art works” embody instinct and naturalness. The observer enjoys a new perspective, he can discover new, more active and multisensory ways to relate to the objects. Because “things” are alive, they "speak" their own language and unveil a soul made of sounds. The recreational as well as the technical and functional aspect brings us to a new reality. The space in which we are all immersed talk to us, the vibrations emanated by these unique objects transform it into a perceptive and experiential dimension. Loudspeakers by great past and present names as Castiglioni, Zanuso and Starck will feature in the exhibition and Kef Muon loudspeakers by Ross Lovegrove will be presented in Italy for the first time. Also on display innovative and experimental musical instruments as the Airpiano by Omer Yosha, everyday objects as the kettle by Sapper for Alessi, and the original personalized door bells by Munari and Mosconi at the exhibition “Invece del campanello” (Instead of a door bell). Besides, artistic installations by Ferreri, Quiet ensemble and Mischer'Traxler, and the new ideas by young international talents working on sound, noise and silence in an exceptionally new way. The exhibition will also include a programme full of fringe activities: performances and didactic workshops as the project “Colour Chaser” by Japanese sound designer Yuri Suzuki.
Admission is free for all the visitors; the exhibition will take place in the foyer. In the same days AuditoriumArte – Auditorium's area dedicated to art - will host the solo exhibition by Swiss sound artist, curated by Anna Cestelli Guidi.

Chiara + AUT for AveAmen - Design per lo Spirito

Chiara Onida and AUT were invited to present a project for the exhibition AVEAMEN, curated by Labit during the Architectural Venice Biennale 2012. All designers were asked to give a contemporary interpretation of the holy Rosary, the catholic praying beads. The outcomes we presented are an exploration of the evolution of the Rosary in history, from functional tool for counting prayers, to instrument for political and social recognition.
